Director, Translational Research, Antiviral Drug Development

Job Description:

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Translational Research for Antiviral Drug Development will spearhead initiatives to design, conduct, and analyze mechanism-of-action studies, support lead optimization, and candidate development studies, establish early signs of efficacy, and drive proof-of-concept studies using in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo models. This pivotal role demands an insightful leader who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and is comfortable juggling multiple responsibilities within a resource-limited setting. Based in Canton, MA, the incumbent will shape our translational strategy, capabilities, and vision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and evaluate new project opportunities, managing drug discovery programs to ensure the development of innovative antiviral therapies
  • Provide strategic guidance to senior leadership, driving the company’s scientific programs to new heights while taking full ownership of project outcomes
  • Work collaboratively with cross-disciplinary teams, including Medicinal Chemistry, Structural Biology, Protein Chemistry, and Biophysics, and manage relationships with external Contract Research Organizations for IND-enabling studies
  • Be the critical player behind developing comprehensive preclinical data packages for partnering and other stakeholders
  • Support and provide scientific input for all translational medicine aspects of clinical and regulatory documents
  • Propose innovative methods and technologies and act as a scientific and business thought leader within the company and the broader scientific and medical community

Qualifications:

  • PhD and/or MD with a primary focus in Virology, Immunology, Oncology, Cellular or Molecular Biology, or Pharmacology
  • At least eight (8) years of experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
  • Substantial expertise in antiviral drug development and a thorough understanding of preclinical drug development strategy
  • Proven experience with pharmacodynamic principles, drug discovery, development, biomarker discovery, and conducting pre-IND and IND-enabling studies.
  • Proven track record in strategic project management leading high-impact scientific publications and grant proposals

  • Expertise in establishing, managing, and running preclinical studies, including designing and implementing protocols and SOPs

Professional Experience and Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in Virology, Molecular Biology, Infectious Diseases or a related scientific field of study. Industry experience required
  • Experience in virology and/or biochemistry, techniques: recombinant DNA techniques, RNA isolation, cell culture, transfections, virus production, amplification, viral quantitation, identification of optimal virus MOI etc
  • Proficiency in assay development
  • Preferred hands-on experience in hit-generation, advancing small molecule or antiviral drugs through lead optimization to candidate selection
  • High attention to detail, with a proven ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.

The opening is at our new state-of-the-art facility in Canton, MA. The successful candidate will engage in different research areas of the company and will work with a successful team of international senior scientists located in the USA and EU. The ideal candidate will have great communication skills, excellent technical skills, exemplary attention to detail, and a passion for learning. This position will have the opportunity to make significant scientific contributions to numerous drug discovery projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain multiple mammalian cell lines and optimize them for viral production and viral assays
  • Perform in-vitro experiments with flexibility and precision, meeting ongoing demands and establishing best practices to maximize tissue culture outputs
  • Conduct High Throughput Screening of compounds or libraries using DSF and ELISA assay techniques, among others
  • Maintain excellent written records of performed experiments, and work with colleagues to develop companywide SOPs
  • Prepare reports of completed projects for presentation to company personnel
  • Help organize laboratory inventory, reagent ordering, and other daily or extraordinary laboratory activities
  • Provide additional research support and assistance to research tasks requested by senior management

Professional Experience and Qualifications:

Research Associate Immuno-Oncology

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and execute a variety of biochemical/cell-based immunological in vitro assays
  • Investigate the effect of small molecules on the function of T and NK cells
  • Independently analyze, interpret, and present data at internal meetings
  • Maintain excellent electronic records of performed experiments and work with colleagues to develop companywide SOPs.
  • Stay updated with relevant scientific literature and propose new experimental strategies and approaches
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other team members to meet daily operations and timelines.
  • Participate in engagement with decision-makers and stakeholders

Professional Experience and Qualifications:

  • BSc with a minimum of 3 years or MS with 1-2 years of relevant experience in immuno-oncology or immunology in laboratory research settings. Industry experience is desired
  • Experience studying human T and NK cell functions
  • Hands-on experience with multi-color FACS, PBMC, MLR, ELISA, western blot and cell-based assays to analyze immune cells in a BSL2 laboratory.
  • Small molecule and antibody experience desired
  • Experience working with myeloid cells desired
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication and time management skills
  • Proficiency in GraphPad and Flow Jo
